Dr. Awa Mbowe

Senior Education Officer | Climate Change & Education Specialist

Dr. Awa Mbowe is a seasoned education and climate change specialist with a strong academic and professional background in policy, research, and development. She earned her PhD in Climate Change & Education from the University of The Gambia (UTG) in April 2025, under the prestigious WASCAL (West Africa Science Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) program. Her doctoral thesis explored “Climate-induced migration and educational attainment of youths in the North Bank Region of The Gambia.”

Dr. Mbowe also holds an MSc in Education Leadership and Policy from East China Normal University (ECNU), Shanghai (2017–2018), where her research focused on the causes of girls’ dropout in The Gambia’s basic education cycle. She completed her BSc in Education (Geography & Mathematics) at UTG between 2010 and 2014.

Professionally, Dr. Mbowe has been serving as a Senior Education Officer at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) since 2015. She has over 10 years of experience in education monitoring and evaluation, policy implementation, and stakeholder engagement, working extensively with communities, NGOs, and international partners.

She is particularly passionate about integrating climate change awareness into educational policy and programming, leveraging education as a tool for climate resilience and social transformation.
